History

Georgia is the most ancient country of Caucasus, which extends from the Black sea to the Caspian. Georgia is the most ancient centre of vine and it is universally recognized as the homeland of viticulture and winemaking. Numerous facts of palaeobotany and archaeology, works by ancient writers and ampelographical , historical and philological reasearch are evidence of the abovementioned statement. Unusual variety of winemaking equipment and wine vessels of the ancient times (VI-V centuries A.D.), found during archeological excavations, are evidence of the fact, that Georgian ancestors were masters of winemaking. In the burials of Bronze Age grape seed were found. This is the evidence of the fact that our ancestors were familiar with the processing the grapes from ancient time.

Burials in the Alazani Valley (Eastern Georgia, Kakheti region), in the suburbs of the ancient capital of Georgia, Mtskheta, on the territory of Kolkheti, the town Vani, etc. attract attention. Vessels of different shapes, marani (wine cellar), ancient stone presses and other things found here assure us that our ancestors mastered the art of processing the grapes from the ancient times and have been improving it during the centuries. A number of Georgian songs, poems and stories convey the high level of viticulture and winemakeing. According to Homer, on the territory of the present Georgia, they produced “aromatic wine” as far back as in the X century. The St. Nino Kapadokieli walked over the whole Georgia with Cross woven from vine and turned the Georgians into Christianity in 334. Bothe before and after, vine was one of the main cults in our country.Ornaments of vine were found on the walls of many Georgian churches. Wine drinking was art and custom. Famous French traveller Jean Charden, who travelled in Georgia in 1672-1673 wrote: “nowhere they drank such fine wine and in such big quantities as in Georgia”. Our ancestots have worked out such special original methods of proccessing grapes and making wine as Kakhetian and Imeretian (names of regions of Georgia) methods. Many famous people admired Georgian wines, among them great politicians of the XX century: Stalin, Rouzvelt, Cherchill and many others.

Viticulture and winemaking were very important in the life of Georgians from the earliest times. The enemies of our country knew that very well. That is why they tried to root out the vineyards first, in order to weaken Georgia. The level of viticulture and winemaking depends on the political-economical status of the country.

From more than 500 local Georgian kinds of grapes our company has chosen the following unique kinds: Mtsvane, Chinuri, Rkatsiteli, Chkhaveri, Khikhvi, Kisi, Saperavi, Dzvelshavi, Aleksandrouli, Saperavi Budishebri, and also imported such valuable technical kinds as Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Pino Noir, Malbec, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay. The wide range of kinds of grapes, proper soil, selection of climate conditions (the company built vineyards in three places: Eastern Georgia – Kakheti, Signagi region, the suburbs of the village Khornabudji, Karagadji; Kakheti, Kvareli region, mikrozone Kindzmarauli; Western Georgia, Imereti, Bagdad region, suburbs of the village Vartsikhe), combination of traditional and modern technologies of winemaking, desire and professionalism of each worker of our company – these are the arguments, which guarantee us the opportunity to produce wines of different types, which will make Georgia famous. Georgia will become the object of invasion for foreigners, but now their aim will be not conquest of our country and rooting out the vineyards, but the motherland of vine and famous Georgian wines.

In Signagi region the territory of the villages Khornabudji and Karagadji is the constituent of Kiziki. Kiziki is the most ancient ethnographical corner of Kakheti. Historical Kiziki is mentioned as Kambechovani. Under this name we find Kiziki in V-VI centuries. Town fortress Khornabudji was the centre of Kambechovani. Vakhushti Batonishvili speaks mentions this fortress. The ruins of mighty town fortress are called now “Tamaris Tsikhe” (“Fortress Tamara”). This fortress looks on the valley, located on the right bank of the river Alazani. Kambechovani (the first mentioning of Kiziki was in the IV century and of Signagi – in the XVIII century) is situated on the crossing of the roads of armenian Alvaneti and Iveria. Khornabudji was a part of Ereti kingdom, and it was the centre of Kambechovani episcopate from the ancient time. It was one of the 12 episcopates, which were created by the king Vakhtang Gorgasali.

The fact that ruins of ancient church were found on the territory of our vineyards, is the evidence of rich culture of Khornabudji. Agriculture developed in Kiziki from the ancient times. Vessels for wine, characteristic for Ereti culture were found on the territory of the present Kiziki.

The region has unique natural conditions for intensive agriculture, particularly for viticulture. Vakhushti Bagrationi wrote about the unique natural conditions of this area. The soil is mainly black earth and carbonated soil. The sun rays, reflected by the water surface of the river Alazani, have beneficial influence on the grapes quality, and then on the wine production. This region of Kakheti was destroyed by the enemy more than once, it is this agricultural zone and the strategic objects which were the main target of our enemies. Our company will try to make famous this beautiful area of Georgia by its grapes and wine products, which are the historical pride of this area. In order to achieve this we grow both local and imported kinds of grapes, which will enable us to produce wine materials of any type.

Our company has also built vineyards in the Western Georgia, in Imereti, near the village Vartsikhe. This region is located at 280 metres above sea level, it is not very hot here in summer and cold winter is a rarity. The climate is mild and moderate. The river Kvirila, which flows here, divides Imereti in two parts. Our microregion is on the left bank of the river Kvirila. Heavy clay soils are typical to the lowlands of this area. The following villages are situated here: Obcha, Dimi, Fersati, Bagdad, Rokiti, and to the south-east the villages Amagleba and Zeindari. The main historical kinds of grapes are: Tsitska, Tsolikauri, Dzvelshavi. In the historical sources it is mentioned that once near the village Parsati they produced wine like “Khvanchkara” from the grapes Aleksandrouli. The wines of that region distinguish by high content of alcohol and acidity and also extraction. In this region we have planted vineyards with Aleksandrouli and Dzvelshavi kinds of grapes.

Our company has built vineyards in one more historically famous winemaking region of Kakheti – Kvareli region. Kvareli region is famous for its red wines. Wine made in Kindzmarauli, Gudanashauri, Tsourebi, Kaliakvana is characterized by intensity of colour and harmony. Natural wine “Kindzmarauli” should be pointed here. Our company has built vineyards on the territory of Kindzmarauli, which is at 450 metres above teh sea level. The vineyards are located on the right bank of the river Durudji, on the steep slopes of Caucasus. From our kinds of grapes Saperavi takes the most place. And Saperavi is valuable for making “Kindzmarauli”.
